Victorinox Prince with celluloid tortoise-shell scales

This is an older Victorinox Prince with tortoise-shell scales. In certain markets (e.g. Canada) it may have been sold under the Treasurer name. The scales are made of celluloid which predates the Cellidor material.

Celluloid is a plastic containing nitrocellulose and camphor. This material is chemically unstable and has the tendency to deteriorate with age which is very obvious in these pictures. There’s a lot of out-gassing going on – the scales are very wet (as is the glass shelf in my display cabinet). It’s highly flammable too. The stuff that is oozing out is probably nitric acid (also used in some rocket fuels – another area I’m interested in) which has caused a lot of corrosion on the exposed rivets and other parts like the liners.
